It’s nothing personal, but the fact is, you can’t trust your own eyes when dealing with your words. A friend once told me that the best piece of advice she received in journalism school was this: “You have to learn how to kill your babies.” You see, your words are kind of like your babies. They mean something to you. You are invested.
You wouldn’t send your babies out into the world without a little preparation now would you? So, unless you are able to set aside all the love and devotion you have for them (few of us rarely can), the best thing you can do for your words is put them in the hands of a professional editor.
And now, before this analogy gets way too ugly with talk of killing and babies (oh boy…), I’m just going to post this video of me talking about why you need a professional editor.
